Anything I don’t have to ride out to and might actually start in Edinburgh?
The idea of the Challenge Ride series is to take people to new territories. Club rides from Edinburgh are the weekly 10am Sunday and Thursday rides from Charwood at Fairmilehead. Check the what's on section of the club's website.

Should the start and finish join up...or is there a long cycle back to the car?
It will just catch the ferry back from Bute to Wemyss Bay which makes 5 ferries

Firstly, I wont be able to make the session this evening. However, if you were planning on doing the session then make your way to the Meadows for a 7pm start to the warmup.
The planned session is:
Warmup: 2k easy, then skips and strides, walking lunges.
Main set: up to) 10 x 3 minutes hard, with 1 min easy recovery. Hard is around 5k pace.
If you have a garmin or similar, you can programme the session into the watch. You could also do this session on the treadmil.
